Knowing failably and Moorean assertions

چکیده

Knowledge-fallibilism is a species of genus that I call knowledge-failabilism. Each theory knowledge's nature. One apparent challenge to knowledge-failabilism's truth the prima facie absurdity Moorean assertions like ‘It's raining but do not believe it is.’ Does each such assertion convey an implicit and unfortunate contrast, even contradiction? argue this Untenable Contrast analysis fails: no contrast present within speaker's perspective at pertinent time.

Moorean Moral Phenomenology

Inquiry into the what-it-is-likeness of concrete moral experience—moral phenomenology—has not generally been part of moral philosophy as practiced in the analytic tradition at least since G. E. Moore’s 1903 Principia Ethica.1 Although there FN:1 have been a few exceptions—including, most notably, Maurice Mandelbaum’s 1955 The Phenomenology of Moral Experience—and although analytic philosophers ...

Moorean Phenomena in Epistemic Logic

A well-known open problem in epistemic logic is to give a syntactic characterization of the successful formulas. Semantically, a formula is successful if and only if for any pointed model where it is true, it remains true after deleting all points where the formula was false. The classic example of a formula that is not successful in this sense is the “Moore sentence” p ∧ ¬ p, read as “p is tru...

Assertions and Recursions

We provide an algebraic description of subtypes and the way they propagate through recursive functions. By abstracting from the concrete domain of functions or relations we obtain a framework which is independent of strict or non-strict, deterministic or non-deterministic semantics. Applications include efficiency increasing simplification of recursions as well as proofs about recursions by noe...

Lazy Assertions

Assertions test expected properties of run-time values without dissrupting the normal working of a program. So in a lazy functional language assertions should be lazy — not forcing evaluation, but only examining what is evaluated by other parts of the program. We describe two different ways of embedding lazy assertions in Haskell, one sequential and the other concurrent. Examples illustrate the...
